Cabinets For Bandor 50mm Drivers

Speaker Cabinets using MDF slices for Bandor

Based upon the sandwich principal, QTA are introducing a range of MDF cabinets using stackable MDF slices.

From an aesthetic viewpoint, the external shape moves away from the customary rectangular shape to something more artistic. The internal corrugated cabinet walls with varying wall thickness provide a higher degree of immunity / noise-reduction re panel flexing than traditional flat-sided enclosures.

The MDF slices are threaded onto a single precision steel pin and use the front panel as a second reference point to achieve vertical alignment. The part-assembled cabinet, less the front panel, is shown in the first photograph. With large swept front corner radii, there are minimal diffraction effects and the slices may be stacked to suit one or two drivers. The cabinets are initially being made available to suit the Bandor 50mm driver. Cabinets may be stacked to produce any vertical arrangement between 1 and 4 drivers. As with all projects of this type, a certain amount of sanding / elbow grease is required to finish off the woodwork.

Additional slices may be ordered which includes a modified front panel and longer pin, thereby providing the opportunity to increase the cabinet free volume. The approximate free volume is 0.33 L / slice.

Also provided are a pair of high quality terminals, driver fixing screws, 0.75mm OFC cabling and a selection of internal padding and stuffing for fine-tuning the acoustics.

No drivers or crossovers are provided. The user must supply and fit the required crossover components as advised by Bandor, either internally prior to complete assembly, (giving improved access), or through the front panel cut-out at a later stage. Of course external crossovers are an alternative option, giving improved circuit isolation.

Cabinets need to be sanded and sealed using a good quality MDF Sealer to prevent particle shedding and provide resistance to surface marking. Cabinets may be left with a natural finish or painted as required. A quality paint filler and surface coating is recommended to achieve a good result. A Satin finish is suggested as these show less surface blemishes.
